Masjid - Khalifa Mosque
For thousands of years, religious buildings have been the centers of their communities. A space where one not only sought the meeting of spiritual needs, but could also find food and refuge. This design attempts to marry the expectations of a traditional mosque with an updated design.
The airy and open design gently breaks down some of the traditional barriers. The men and women still have separate entrances and prayer locations, but the women’s space is elevated, allowing them to observe the same service as the men. The intricate panelling brings in the rich cultural history of Islamic pattern and design, while the flat roof and geometric skylights seek a fresh perspective for the space.
